Biography

Alex Vohr is a retired Marine Corps colonel and corporate executive who leverages 38 years of experience to teach leaders to plan, to think, and make things happen when the pressure is on.  A combat commander, an operational planner, and the director of an accredited masters degree program, The School of Advanced Warfighting, Alex blends battlefield and Marine Corps leadership with corporate experience to help organizations and leaders thrive in uncertainty.

Alex began his Marine Corps career during an intellectual renaissance for the Corps.  The work of Air Force Colonel John Boyd was a significant influence in the development of a new Marine Corps warfighting doctrine.  Boyd is most recognized for his Observe-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) loop and Alex has written a book, “Speed Kills- Leveraging John Boyd’s OODA Loop to Build Organizations That Win,” that helps readers understand Boyd’s OODA loop and apply it in a practical way to organizations.

Alex served as a logistics officer, a Department of War acquisition professional, an educator, and an operational planner.  In the commercial world he has 13 years of small-scale liquid natural gas (LNG) development and operations experience.

Schwerpunkt is a German word meaning focal point or center of gravity.  The lessons of the Prussian military reformation and the German experience in late World War I with storm troop tactics influenced the Marine Corps doctrine of maneuver warfare.  A center of gravity is an organizational or individual source of strength.  Understanding one’s own organization’s schwerpunkt and the schwerpunkt of competitors is critical for all leaders.
